Black Boxfish (Ostracion meleagris / Black Boxfish)
A unique and eye-catching marine species, the Black Boxfish is known for its distinctive box-shaped body and beautiful spotted patterning. Males develop a striking dark blue to black body covered in bright white spots, making them one of the most unusual and attractive fish available for larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with calm to moderately active tankmates such as tangs, wrasses, butterflyfish, and angelfish. Avoid aggressive or boisterous species that may stress the fish.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Generally safe with corals but may occasionally pick at small crustaceans, worms, and other tiny invertebrates. Like other boxfish, it can release toxins if severely stressed.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, algae-based foods, sponges, and quality marine pellets. Offer a varied diet 1–2 times daily to maintain health and coloration.

- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires stable water conditions, excellent water quality, and peaceful tankmates. Sensitive to stress and sudden environmental changes.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of open swimming space and avoid aggressive tankmates. As with all boxfish species, minimise stress and handle with care, as severe stress can trigger the release of toxins that may affect other aquarium inhabitants.
