Description
Birdmouth Wrasse – Male (Gomphosus varius / Bird Wrasse)
A striking and highly active marine fish, the Male Birdmouth Wrasse is instantly recognisable by its elongated "beak-like" snout and vibrant green to turquoise coloration. Constantly on the move, this intelligent wrasse is a captivating addition to large marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust species such as tangs, angelfish, triggerfish, butterflyfish, and larger wrasses. May prey on very small fish, shrimp, crabs, and other ornamental invertebrates.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Does not typically harm corals, but will readily consume small crustaceans, worms, and other mobile invertebrates. Best suited to fish-only or carefully planned reef systems.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on crustaceans, worms, mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily due to its active metabolism and constant swimming behaviour.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires a large aquarium with excellent water quality, plenty of swimming space, and secure rockwork.
Top Tip:
A tight-fitting lid is essential, as Bird Wrasses are powerful jumpers. Provide a varied meaty diet and plenty of open swimming space to keep this energetic species in peak condition.
