Description
Bicolour Goatfish (Parupeneus barberinus / Bicolour Goatfish)
A striking and active marine species, the Bicolour Goatfish is instantly recognisable by its bold two-toned body, elongated barbels, and sand-sifting behaviour. Known for its dynamic movement and foraging activity, it is an engaging addition to large reef and community aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with other non-aggressive or moderately active species such as tangs, wrasses, anthias, and larger gobies. Avoid very small or delicate fish, as they may be disturbed during sand-sifting.
Reef Compatibility:
Generally reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates. Excellent for tanks with deep sand beds to allow natural foraging behaviour.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood, as well as detritus and microfauna in the substrate. Feed 1–2 times daily to mimic natural foraging.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated, but requires a well-established aquarium with a deep sand bed and ample swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide at least 5–10cm of fine sand substrate for natural sand-sifting behaviour. Ensure a large tank to allow free movement, and include scattered live rock for shelter and resting spots.
