Bella Goby (Valenciennea bella / Bella Sand-Sifting Goby)
The Bella Goby is a beautiful and highly active sand-sifting marine fish, recognised for its pale body with attractive orange-red markings and subtle blue highlights. Constantly taking mouthfuls of substrate and filtering it through its gills, it helps keep the sand bed clean and aerated while adding plenty of character to the aquarium.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Excellent with clownfish, blennies, cardinalfish, wrasses, tangs, and other non-aggressive community fish. Best kept singly or as an established pair, as similar sand-sifting gobies may become territorial towards one another.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Safe with corals and ornamental invertebrates. Its vigorous sand-sifting can occasionally deposit sand onto corals positioned close to the substrate, so lower-placed corals may require occasional attention.
Diet:
Carnivore – naturally consumes small crustaceans, worms, and other microorganisms while sifting through the substrate. Supplement with mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and quality sinking marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily.

Care Level:
Moderate – best kept in a mature aquarium with a well-established fine sand bed containing plenty of natural microfauna. Stable water quality and regular supplemental feeding are important for maintaining good body condition.
Top Tip:
Provide a generous area of fine sand for natural sifting and burrowing behaviour. Make sure the Bella Goby receives prepared foods rather than relying entirely on what it finds in the substrate, and use a secure lid as sand-sifting gobies can be excellent jumpers.
