Banjo Catfish – Unique, Peaceful Bottom-Dweller for Your Aquarium

Introduce a truly fascinating species to your aquarium with the Banjo Catfish (Brachyplatystoma vaillantii), an unusual and peaceful bottom-dweller that is as intriguing as it is beautiful. With its flattened, triangular body resembling a banjo, this catfish brings a touch of the exotic to any aquarium, making it a must-have for aquarists seeking something unique and captivating.

The Banjo Catfish is named for its distinct shape that mimics a banjo, with its broad, flat body and elongated pectoral fins. This catfish has evolved to be an excellent ambush predator in the wild, often staying hidden among debris or substrates, waiting for food to pass by. While it may initially be a bit elusive in the aquarium, with time it becomes more comfortable and is often seen perching motionless on the substrate, adding a fascinating dynamic to your tank.

A peaceful species, the Banjo Catfish is not aggressive and prefers to stay out of the way of other tankmates. It does well in larger aquariums with soft, sandy substrates where it can bury itself and feel secure.

Key Features:

  • Unique Appearance: Flattened, triangular body that resembles a banjo, making it a standout in any aquarium

  • Peaceful & Shy: Prefers a quiet and undisturbed environment, coexisting peacefully with other calm and non-aggressive species

  • Excellent Substrate Dweller: Enjoys burrowing into soft substrates, making it an ideal addition for aquariums with fine sand or gravel

  • Low Maintenance: Hardy and easy to care for, perfect for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking for something different

Care Guidelines:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a single or small group of Banjo Catfish

  • Water Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)

  • pH Range: 6.5–7.5

  • Diet: Omnivorous – feeds on sinking pellets, live or frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and detritus from the substrate

  • Lifespan: 8–12 years with proper care

Tip: The Banjo Catfish loves a soft, sandy substrate for burrowing, so be sure to provide this type of environment to prevent injury to its sensitive body. It also appreciates a tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as rocks, driftwood, or caves, where it can retreat when it feels the need for privacy.

The Banjo Catfish is an extraordinary and peaceful addition to any freshwater aquarium. Its unique, almost "camouflaged" appearance, combined with its fascinating behavior, makes it a captivating species that will intrigue and delight all who view it.
