Description
Antennata Lionfish (Pterois antennata / Spotfin Lionfish)
A spectacular and elegant marine predator, the Antennata Lionfish is recognised by its long flowing fins, intricate banded patterning, and distinctive antenna-like appendages above the eyes. Its graceful movements and striking appearance make it a stunning centrepiece for larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive to predatory. Best kept with larger, robust tankmates such as tangs, angelfish, triggerfish, and larger wrasses. Any fish or crustacean small enough to fit in its mouth may be viewed as prey.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Harmless to corals, but will prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, and smaller fish. Best suited to fish-only systems or carefully planned mixed aquariums.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on mysis shrimp, krill, lancefish, silversides, squid, and other meaty marine foods. Most specimens can be trained onto frozen foods. Feed 2–3 times per week once established.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 300L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once feeding consistently but requires stable water conditions, careful tankmate selection, and respect for its venomous spines.
Top Tip:
Provide caves and shaded areas for resting during the day. Use feeding tongs when target feeding and always exercise caution during maintenance, as the dorsal spines are venomous and can deliver a painful sting.
