Description

Horned Frog (Ceratophrys sp.)

The Horned Frog, often known as the Pacman Frog, is a bold and fascinating amphibian famous for its round body, huge mouth, and powerful feeding response. With its vibrant colours and ambush predator behaviour, this species makes an eye-catching and low-maintenance pet for both beginners and experienced amphibian keepers.

Habitat

Native to South America, Horned Frogs are terrestrial amphibians that spend much of their time partially buried in moist substrate, waiting for prey to pass by.

  • Enclosure: Secure terrestrial terrarium with plenty of floor space
  • Temperature: 22–28°C
  • Humidity: Moderate to high (60–80%)
  • Decor: Moist moss, leaf litter, hides, and a shallow water dish for soaking

Feeding

Horned Frogs are powerful ambush predators with a huge appetite and strong feeding response.

  • Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, worms, and occasional pinkie mice for larger adults
  • Feeding frequency:
    • Juveniles: Every 1–2 days
    • Adults: 2–3 times per week
  • Dust feeders with calcium and vitamin supplements regularly

General Care

These frogs are hardy and easy to care for, though they are best kept as display animals rather than handling pets.

  • Temperament: Sedentary, bold, and can bite when startled or feeding
  • Handling: Minimal handling recommended
  • Lifespan: Around 6–10 years with proper care
  • Maintenance: Keep substrate moist but not waterlogged and maintain good hygiene

Why Choose a Horned Frog?

  • Unique round body and giant mouth
  • Fascinating ambush predator behaviour
  • Bright colours and striking appearance
  • Beginner-friendly and easy to maintain
