Description
Aiptasia Eating Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus / Bristle-tail Filefish)
A highly useful and fascinating marine species, the Aiptasia Eating Filefish is best known for its ability to control pest Aiptasia anemones in reef aquariums. With its mottled camouflage pattern and curious personality, it is both functional and entertaining to observe.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally compatible with clownfish, gobies, wrasses, tangs, and other community marine species. May nip at small ornamental shrimp or very small invertebrates in some cases.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Excellent for Aiptasia control, but may occasionally nip at zoanthids, soft corals, or LPS corals once Aiptasia is depleted. Behaviour is individual-dependent.
Diet:
Omnivore – naturally feeds on Aiptasia anemones, but should also be offered mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily once pest food sources are reduced.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 100L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy once acclimated, but care should be taken after pest control is achieved to ensure it accepts prepared foods.
Top Tip:
Best introduced when Aiptasia is present so it develops a natural feeding response. Once pests are gone, gradually transition to a varied prepared diet to maintain long-term health.
