African Clownfish (Amphiprion allardi / Allard’s Clownfish)
A bold and attractive marine species, the African Clownfish is recognised for its dark body, bright yellow tail, and striking white vertical bands. Native to the Western Indian Ocean, this hardy clownfish is a fantastic choice for reef and community aquariums, offering both colour and personality.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with peaceful to moderately robust species such as gobies, blennies, wrasses, and tangs. Can become territorial, especially when paired or hosting an anemone. Avoid housing with overly aggressive clownfish species.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and most invertebrates. May form a symbiotic relationship with host anemones, though this is not required in captivity.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on a varied diet including marine pellets, flakes, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feed 1–2 times daily to maintain health and vibrant colouration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 100L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy and adaptable once acclimated, making it suitable for both beginner and intermediate marine aquarists.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of live rock and shelter to help reduce territorial behaviour. If keeping a pair, introduce them together and allow time for natural pairing to occur.
