African Blenny (Salarias spp. / African Algae Blenny)
A hardy and characterful marine fish, the African Blenny is known for its algae-grazing behaviour, curious personality, and constant activity around rockwork. Its natural camouflage and expressive appearance make it both practical and entertaining in reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally compatible with clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and tangs. Can become territorial toward similar blennies or bottom-dwelling fish in smaller aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and most invertebrates. Excellent for controlling nuisance algae in reef systems.
Diet:
Herbivore/Omnivore – primarily feeds on algae and biofilm. Supplement with algae sheets, spirulina-based pellets, marine flakes, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp. Feed daily alongside natural grazing opportunities.

- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 80L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy and adaptable, making it suitable for beginner and experienced marine aquarists alike. Benefits from mature rockwork with natural algae growth.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of live rock and crevices for grazing and shelter. Supplemental algae feeding is important in cleaner aquariums where natural algae growth is limited.
