Yellow Tail Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum)
A spectacular and highly sought-after marine species, the Yellow Tail Purple Tang is instantly recognisable by its deep purple body contrasted with a bright yellow tail. Its striking coloration and active swimming make it a showpiece fish for larger reef and community aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust tankmates such as tangs, angelfish, and wrasse. Avoid small, timid, or slow-moving species that may be harassed. Territorial behaviour is common, especially in confined tanks.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it suitable for reef setups.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily grazes on algae. Offer a varied diet of marine algae, spirulina flakes or pellets, and occasional frozen or dried vegetable matter. Multiple feedings per day help maintain vibrant coloration and support healthy growth.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 600L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters and plenty of swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide abundant live rock for grazing and open swimming areas. Introduce into a mature tank to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. Regularly supplement with algae-rich foods to maintain its brilliant purple and yellow coloration.
