Description
Volitans Lionfish (Pterois volitans / Common Lionfish)
A stunning and dramatic marine species, the Volitans Lionfish is instantly recognisable by its striking red, white, and brown banding and long, venomous fins. Known for its predatory and ambush behaviour, it is best suited for experienced aquarists and larger tanks with robust tankmates.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. Best kept with similarly sized, robust fish. Avoid small or slow-moving species, as they may be seen as prey. Territorial in confined spaces.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. Predatory species; will feed on smaller fish and invertebrates. Suitable for species-specific setups or tanks with large, non-prey species.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on live or frozen meaty foods such as small fish, shrimp, and crustaceans. Can adapt to frozen mysis, silversides, or other meaty preparations. Feed every 1–2 days depending on size.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Advanced – requires a mature aquarium with stable water conditions, plenty of hiding spots, and a secure lid to prevent escape.
Top Tip:
Provide rock caves or ledges for hiding and ambush behaviour. Always handle with care, as fins are venomous. Regular feedings of high-quality meaty foods support health and vibrant coloration.
