Velvet Spider (Eresus sp.)
Velvet Spiders are beautiful and unusual terrestrial spiders known for their compact build, velvety appearance and striking colouration. Species within the Eresus genus can vary considerably in appearance, with males of some species developing spectacular red or orange abdomens with contrasting black markings. Their small size, fascinating behaviour and relatively straightforward husbandry make them an excellent display species for invertebrate enthusiasts.
Habitat
Velvet Spiders are primarily terrestrial and naturally construct silk-lined retreats and burrows where they spend much of their time.
- Enclosure: Small, secure and well-ventilated terrestrial enclosure

- Humidity: Generally low to moderate; avoid excessively damp or stagnant conditions
- Decor: Cork bark, small rocks, leaf litter, twigs and other suitable anchor points for webbing

Feeding
Velvet Spiders are predatory and readily take appropriately sized live insects.
- Diet: Small crickets, roaches, flies and other appropriately sized feeder insects
- Juveniles: Offer small prey approximately 1–2 times per week
- Adults: Generally feed around once per week depending on size and body condition
- Remove uneaten prey if it is not taken
- Small droplets of water can occasionally be offered on the side of the enclosure, taking care not to make the enclosure excessively wet
