Description
Tiger Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus bellulus / Tiger Pistol Shrimp)
A fascinating and highly interactive marine invertebrate, the Tiger Pistol Shrimp is known for its bold tiger-striped pattern and its unique “pistol” snapping claw, which it uses to communicate and defend its burrow. It is most famous for its symbiotic relationship with gobies.
Compatibility:
Peaceful, but territorial within its burrow. Best kept with compatible goby species (such as watchman or shrimp gobies) that will form a symbiotic pairing. Avoid housing with predatory fish that may target shrimp.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and most invertebrates. Excellent addition to reef systems when paired correctly with a goby.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on leftover meaty foods, detritus, and fine particulate matter. Will accept mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and sinking marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily if natural food is limited.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 60L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – hardy once established but requires stable water conditions and a suitable sandy substrate for burrow construction.
Top Tip:
Always pair with a compatible goby for the best natural behaviour. Provide a fine sand substrate and small rubble pieces so the shrimp can build and maintain a secure burrow system.
