Description
Thai Vinegaroon Scorpion (Typopeltis sp.)
The Thai Vinegaroon Scorpion is a fascinating and unusual arachnid, renowned for its formidable appearance, powerful pincers and distinctive whip-like tail. Despite its intimidating looks and common name, this remarkable creature is not a true scorpion and does not possess a venomous sting.
Native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, vinegaroons are also known as Whip Scorpions. They are nocturnal predators that use their powerful pedipalps to capture prey and their long, sensitive whip-like tail to detect their surroundings.
When threatened, vinegaroons can release a defensive spray containing acetic acid, giving them their distinctive vinegar-like smell and common name.
Their prehistoric appearance, fascinating behaviour and unusual defensive abilities make them a fantastic addition to a specialist invertebrate collection.
Habitat
Thai Vinegaroons are primarily terrestrial and burrowing arachnids that require a warm, humid environment with plenty of sheltered areas.
-
Enclosure: A secure, well-ventilated terrestrial enclosure with sufficient floor space and opportunities for burrowing
-
Temperature: Approximately 24–28°C
-
Humidity: Generally around 70–80%, with good ventilation
-
Moisture: A consistently moist retreat should be available, avoiding waterlogged or stagnant conditions
-
Decor: Cork bark, hides, leaf litter and sheltered areas
-
Lighting: A consistent day/night cycle should be provided, with no specialist UVB lighting generally required
-
Water: A shallow dish of fresh water should always be available
-
Ventilation: Good airflow is essential to maintain healthy conditions
Vinegaroons naturally spend much of their time concealed in burrows or beneath sheltered areas, particularly during daylight hours.
Feeding
Thai Vinegaroons are carnivorous predators that feed on a variety of live invertebrates.
-
Diet: Crickets, roaches, locusts, mealworms and other appropriately sized feeder insects
-
Juveniles: Small prey can be offered approximately 2–3 times per week, depending on appetite
-
Adults: Generally fed around once or twice per week, adjusted according to body condition
-
Feeding Behaviour: Use their powerful front appendages to capture and hold prey
-
Water: Fresh drinking water should always be available
-
Maintenance: Uneaten prey should be removed, particularly when the animal is preparing to moult
Vinegaroons are fascinating hunters and may spend considerable time exploring their enclosure in search of food after dark.
General Care
Thai Vinegaroons are best appreciated as display animals rather than regularly handled pets.
-
Temperament: Generally secretive and non-aggressive when left undisturbed, but capable of defensive reactions
-
Handling: Handling is not recommended due to the risk of defensive pinching and spraying
-
Defence: Can release an acidic, vinegar-smelling spray when threatened, which may irritate skin and eyes
-
Venom: Vinegaroons do not possess venomous stingers
-
Adult Size: Commonly around 4–7cm in body length, excluding the whip-like tail, depending on species
-
Lifespan: Potentially several years, with some vinegaroons living considerably longer under suitable conditions
-
Activity: Primarily nocturnal, spending much of the day hidden
-
Housing: Best housed individually
-
Maintenance: Stable humidity, appropriate temperatures, clean water and regular enclosure maintenance are essential
Although commonly referred to as scorpions, vinegaroons belong to a separate group of arachnids known as Thelyphonida.
