Description
Snowflake Eel (Echidna nebulosa / Snowflake Moray Eel)
A striking and hardy marine predator, the Snowflake Eel is known for its white and yellow patterned body resembling falling snowflakes. Despite its intimidating appearance, it is generally one of the more peaceful moray eel species and is a popular choice for large marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive to predatory. Best kept with larger, robust fish such as tangs, angelfish, triggerfish, and larger wrasses. Will eat small fish and invertebrates, so tankmates must be carefully selected.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. Will prey on shrimp, crabs, snails, and any fish small enough to fit into its mouth. Best suited to fish-only marine systems.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on squid, shrimp, mussels, clams, fish pieces, and other meaty marine foods. Should be fed 2–3 times per week once established. Use tongs for safe feeding.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once settled but requires strong filtration, secure rockwork, and tight lids to prevent escape.
Top Tip:
Ensure all rockwork is very stable, as eels will push and rearrange décor. Always use a secure lid, as Snowflake Eels are known escape artists. Feed with tongs to reduce risk during feeding and maintain good hygiene.
