Red Hooded Dwarf Parrot (Scarus rubroviolaceus / Redlip Parrotfish)
The Red Hooded Dwarf Parrot is a colourful and unusual marine fish, admired for its vivid red facial and head markings contrasting against green, blue, and turquoise tones across the body. An active swimmer and constant grazer, this striking species brings both colour and natural grazing behaviour to large, mature marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally compatible with tangs, wrasses, angelfish, butterflyfish, and other moderately robust marine fish. Requires plenty of swimming room and should not be housed with overly aggressive species that may prevent it from feeding naturally.
Reef Compatibility:
Not fully reef-safe. Parrotfish naturally graze on algae growing across rock and coral surfaces and may scrape or damage stony corals while feeding. Best suited to large fish-only systems or carefully planned reef aquariums where its natural grazing behaviour can be accommodated.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily grazes on algae and other organic material growing across hard surfaces. Supplement with marine algae, nori, spirulina-based pellets, vegetable-rich frozen foods, and other high-quality herbivore preparations. Feed 2–3 times daily while providing plenty of natural grazing opportunities.

Top Tip:
Provide plenty of mature rockwork with natural algae growth and supplement regularly with algae-rich foods. These fish are active grazers, so maintaining a consistent supply of appropriate food is essential for keeping them in good condition.
