Description
Picasso Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus aculeatus)
A vividly patterned and highly energetic marine species, the Picasso Triggerfish is instantly recognisable by its striking geometric markings, bold colours, and dynamic swimming behaviour. A popular choice for large marine aquariums, it adds both personality and visual impact.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best housed with robust tankmates such as tangs, wrasse, and large angelfish. Avoid small, slow-moving, or timid species, as they may be harassed. Territorial behaviour is common, especially in smaller tanks.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. May nip at corals, invertebrates, and other tank inhabitants. Best suited for fish-only or fish-plus-live-rock setups.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on a varied diet of meaty foods including shrimp, mussels, squid, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Occasional live foods encourage natural hunting behaviour. Feed multiple times per week rather than daily to prevent overfeeding.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 400L
Care Level:
Advanced – requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters, ample swimming space, and secure hiding spots.
Top Tip:
Introduce into a mature tank and provide caves or crevices for retreat. Regularly rotate food types to maintain colour vibrancy and stimulate natural hunting instincts.
