Description
Pearlscale Butterflyfish – Fiji (Chaetodon xanthurus / Pearlscale Butterflyfish)
A beautifully patterned marine species, the Pearlscale Butterflyfish is recognised for its pearly silver body covered in delicate dark-edged scales and bright yellow highlights. Native to the reefs around Fiji and the Indo-Pacific, it adds elegance and constant movement to larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with calm to moderately robust species such as tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and angelfish. May become territorial toward other butterflyfish in smaller systems.
Reef Compatibility:
Not fully reef-safe. May nip at soft corals, LPS corals, feather dusters, and sessile invertebrates. Best suited to fish-only or carefully monitored reef aquariums.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, marine algae, and high-quality marine flakes or pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily for optimal health and colouration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 250L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated but benefits from stable water conditions, mature rockwork, and ample swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide a varied diet and plenty of rockwork for grazing and shelter. Introducing healthy specimens already feeding well greatly improves acclimation and long-term success.
