Description
Pale Lip Tang (Acanthurus leucocheilus / Palelip Surgeonfish)
A striking and relatively uncommon tang, the Pale Lip Tang is recognised by its deep brown body, subtle facial markings, and distinctive pale lips. It is an active grazer and a powerful swimmer, making it a strong addition to large, mature marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust marine species such as wrasses, angelfish, clownfish, and suitably sized tangs. Can become territorial, particularly toward other surgeonfish, especially in smaller systems.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, and contributes to algae control in reef environments.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on marine algae. Provide a varied diet including algae sheets, spirulina flakes or pellets, and vegetable-based marine foods. Feed 2–3 times daily for optimal health and condition.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 500L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a large, well-established aquarium with stable water conditions, high oxygenation, and ample swimming space.
Top Tip:
Introduce into a mature tank with plenty of live rock for grazing. Careful consideration should be given when mixing with other tangs due to territorial behaviour.
