Melanotus Butterflyfish (Chaetodon melannotus)
A bold and highly distinctive butterflyfish, the Melanotus Butterflyfish features a bright yellow body overlaid with intricate black chevron markings and a striking black eye band. Its unique patterning and active swimming behaviour make it a real standout in larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Generally mixes well with tangs, angelfish, wrasse, and other moderately robust community fish. Best kept singly unless housed in a very large aquarium, as it may show aggression towards other butterflyfish.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. Known to nip at soft corals, LPS, zoanthids, and other sessile invertebrates.
Diet:
Carnivore – may be a reluctant feeder initially. Offer a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine preparations. Feeding little and often helps establish strong feeding responses.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 300L
Care Level:
Moderate to Advanced – requires a mature, stable aquarium and can be sensitive during acclimation.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of swimming space along with rockwork for security, and introduce into a well-established tank to improve feeding success and long-term health.
