Description
Maldive Pufferfish (Canthigaster janthinoptera / Honeycomb Toby)
The Maldive Pufferfish is a small and characterful sharpnose puffer, recognised for its intricate spotted patterning, pale body, and colourful markings around the face and fins. Intelligent, inquisitive, and constantly exploring its surroundings, it makes an entertaining addition to established marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with confident marine fish such as clownfish, wrasses, tangs, dwarf angelfish, and larger gobies. May nip at slow-moving or long-finned fish and can become territorial towards other puffers.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. May nip at corals and will potentially consume ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, worms, and other small invertebrates. Best suited to fish-only systems or carefully monitored reef aquariums.
Diet:
Omnivore/Carnivore – offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, krill, chopped mussel, cockle, clam, squid, and quality marine pellets. Regular hard-shelled foods help provide natural wear for its continuously growing teeth.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Easy to Moderate – generally hardy once established, but requires stable water quality, good filtration, and an appropriate varied diet.
Top Tip:
Regularly offer appropriately sized shell-on foods to encourage natural tooth wear. Like other sharpnose puffers, the Maldive Puffer is highly inquisitive, so plenty of caves, rockwork, and areas to explore will help encourage natural behaviour.
