Description
Heniochus Butterfly – Red Sea (Heniochus intermedius / Red Sea Bannerfish)
A stunning and elegant marine species, the Red Sea Heniochus Butterfly is admired for its bold black-and-white patterning, vibrant yellow highlights, and long flowing dorsal filament. Native to the Red Sea, this graceful fish is a true showpiece in larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with other calm to moderately robust species such as tangs, wrasses, angelfish, and clownfish. Can usually be kept singly or in pairs in sufficiently large aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. May nip at soft corals, LPS corals, feather dusters, and some sessile invertebrates. Best suited for fish-only or carefully monitored mixed reef systems.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, marine algae, and quality marine flakes or pellets. Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain vibrant colouration and long-term health.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 350L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once established but requires stable water conditions, strong filtration, and plenty of swimming space.
Top Tip:
Provide open swimming areas alongside rock structures for security. Keeping water quality high and feeding a varied diet helps maintain its striking colours and flowing finnage.
