Description
Crimson Knobbed Starfish (Protoreaster linckii / Knobbed Starfish)
A striking and hardy marine invertebrate, the Crimson Knobbed Starfish is known for its bright red coloration and prominent knobs, making it a standout addition to marine aquariums. It is a fascinating species for observing natural behaviours on the substrate.
Compatibility:
Peaceful with most fish species, but may prey on small invertebrates like snails or soft corals. Avoid housing with delicate or tiny invertebrates.
Reef Compatibility:
Not fully reef-safe. May eat sessile invertebrates, so best suited to fish-only or mixed-species tanks without vulnerable corals.
Diet:
Carnivore/Detritivore – feeds on detritus, leftover food, and small invertebrates. Will scavenge along the substrate for food. Supplement with meaty foods such as chopped shrimp or mussels.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 200L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy but requires stable water conditions and adequate space on the substrate to move and forage.
Top Tip:
Provide a sandy or fine gravel substrate for natural movement and foraging. Avoid aggressive tankmates that may damage or stress the starfish. Regular feeding of meaty foods helps maintain vibrant coloration and health.
