Coloured Anglerfish (Antennarius sp. / Frogfish)
The Coloured Anglerfish, also commonly known as a Frogfish, is one of the most unusual and fascinating predators available for the marine aquarium. Available in a variety of colours and patterns, these masters of camouflage use a modified dorsal spine known as an illicium and lure to attract unsuspecting prey before striking with incredible speed.
Compatibility:
Predatory. Best kept alone or with carefully selected tankmates considerably larger than the anglerfish. Despite their slow appearance, they are capable of swallowing surprisingly large fish and may attempt to eat tankmates close to their own size.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Generally harmless to corals, but not safe with fish or ornamental crustaceans small enough to be eaten. They are particularly well suited to dedicated species or predator displays.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on meaty marine foods such as shrimp, krill, squid, and appropriately sized pieces of marine fish. Specimens should ideally be transitioned onto frozen foods rather than routinely fed live feeder fish. Feed approximately 2–3 times per week, depending on size and condition.

Care Level:
Moderate – generally sedentary and straightforward once feeding reliably, but careful tankmate selection and controlled feeding are essential. Adult size varies considerably between Antennarius species.
Top Tip:
Never underestimate the size of prey an Anglerfish can swallow. Choose tankmates very carefully and avoid overfeeding, as frogfish have slow metabolisms and large meals take considerable time to digest.
