Moroccan Rock Toad (Barbarophryne brongersmai)
The Moroccan Rock Toad is a rare and fascinating amphibian native to the arid regions of North Africa. With its compact body, sandy camouflage, and secretive nature, this unusual species is well adapted to life in dry environments. Its unique appearance and relatively simple care requirements make it an excellent choice for amphibian enthusiasts looking for something a little different.
Habitat
In the wild, Barbarophryne brongersmai inhabits semi-arid grasslands, rocky areas, and sandy plains, spending much of its time hidden beneath the ground or sheltering under natural cover.
- Enclosure: Secure terrestrial terrarium with plenty of floor space
- Temperature: 22–28°C
- Humidity: Low to moderate (40–60%), with a slightly more humid retreat available
- Decor: Cork bark, rocks, hides, and a shallow water dish for soaking
Feeding
Moroccan Rock Toad is an opportunistic insectivore with a healthy appetite for live prey.
- Diet: Crickets, roaches, small locusts, mealworms, earthworms, and other appropriately sized live insects

- Juveniles: Every 1–2 days
- Adults: 2–3 times per week
- Feeder insects should be dusted regularly with calcium and vitamin supplements
General Care
This hardy species is relatively easy to care for when provided with suitable temperatures and a secure environment.
- Temperament: Calm, shy, and primarily nocturnal
- Handling: Minimal handling recommended to avoid stress and protect their sensitive skin
- Lifespan: Around 8–10 years with proper care
- Maintenance: Maintain a clean enclosure, provide fresh water at all times, and avoid excessive humidity
