Description

Mexican Golden Red Rump Tarantula (Brachypelma albiceps)

The Mexican Golden Red Rump Tarantula is a beautiful New World terrestrial species renowned for its distinctive golden-blonde carapace, dark legs and contrasting reddish abdominal hairs. Native to Mexico, Brachypelma albiceps is a slow-growing, heavy-bodied tarantula with an impressive adult appearance. Its generally manageable nature and straightforward care requirements make it a fantastic display species for both newer and experienced tarantula keepers.

Habitat

Brachypelma albiceps originates from relatively dry regions of Mexico and should be maintained in a terrestrial setup with plenty of floor space and a secure retreat.

  • Enclosure: Secure terrestrial enclosure with good ventilation
  • Temperature: Around 22–26°C
  • Humidity: Low to moderate; avoid consistently wet or waterlogged conditions
  • Decor: Cork bark hide, leaf litter and other natural cover
  • Provide sufficient depth for digging and creating a retreat
  • A fresh water dish should always be available

Feeding

The Mexican Golden Red Rump readily accepts a variety of appropriately sized live insects.

  • Diet: Crickets, locusts, roaches, mealworms and other suitable feeder insects
  • Spiderlings/Juveniles: Offer appropriately sized prey around 2–3 times per week
  • Adults: Generally feed around once per week depending on size and body condition
  • Remove uneaten prey, particularly when the tarantula is approaching a moult
  • Adults may occasionally refuse food for extended periods, particularly around moulting

General Care

Like other Brachypelma species, B. albiceps is relatively slow-growing and can be exceptionally long-lived.

  • Temperament: Generally calm but may become defensive when disturbed
  • Handling: Not recommended
  • Defence: Possesses urticating hairs which may be kicked when threatened
  • Adult Size: Approximately 12–15cm leg span
  • Lifespan: Females can potentially live 20+ years, while males have considerably shorter lifespans
  • Maintenance: Provide clean water, good ventilation and stable conditions while avoiding unnecessary disturbance
