Brazilian Red & White Tarantula (Vitalius chromatus)
The Brazilian Red & White Tarantula is a striking New World terrestrial species known for its impressive size, contrasting leg markings and strong feeding response. Previously widely known in the hobby as Nhandu chromatus, this species is now classified as Vitalius chromatus. Adults display a dark body, prominent white bands on the legs and reddish-orange hairs across the abdomen, creating a fantastic display tarantula for more confident keepers.
Habitat
Native to Brazil, Vitalius chromatus is a terrestrial tarantula that appreciates plenty of floor space and the opportunity to dig and create a retreat.
- Enclosure: Secure terrestrial enclosure with good ventilation
- Temperature: Around 22–26°C
- Humidity: Moderate, avoiding excessively wet or stagnant conditions
- Decor: Cork bark hide, leaf litter and natural cover
- Provide sufficient depth for digging and burrowing behaviour
- A fresh water dish should always be available
Feeding
The Brazilian Red & White Tarantula is an enthusiastic predator and typically displays an excellent feeding response.
- Diet: Crickets, locusts, roaches, mealworms and other appropriately sized live insects
- Spiderlings/Juveniles: Offer appropriately sized prey around 2–3 times per week
- Adults: Generally feed around once per week depending on size and body condition
- Remove uneaten prey, particularly when the tarantula appears to be approaching a moult
- Fresh water should always be available
General Care
Vitalius chromatus is a relatively hardy tarantula, although its speed, size and defensive behaviour mean it is generally better suited to keepers with some experience.

- Handling: Not recommended
- Defence: Possesses urticating hairs which may be kicked when threatened
- Adult Size: Approximately 15–18cm leg span
- Lifespan: Females may live around 12–15+ years, while males typically have considerably shorter lifespans
- Maintenance: Maintain good ventilation, provide clean water and avoid unnecessary disturbance
