Brittle Sea Starfish (Ophiuroidea spp.)
A fascinating and highly useful marine invertebrate, the Brittle Sea Starfish is known for its long, flexible arms and quick, snake-like movement. Unlike traditional starfish, it is an active scavenger that helps keep aquariums clean by consuming leftover food and detritus.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Safe with most community fish including clownfish, gobies, blennies, and tangs. Avoid large predatory species such as triggers and puffers that may attack it.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe (with caution). Most species are harmless to corals and invertebrates, though very large individuals or certain species may opportunistically catch small fish. Best suited for well-balanced reef systems.
Diet:
Carnivore/Scavenger – feeds on leftover food, detritus, and small meaty particles. May require occasional supplemental feeding with small pieces of shrimp, fish, or sinking pellets.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Easy to moderate – hardy once acclimated, but sensitive to sudden changes in salinity or water quality. Best introduced via slow acclimation.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of live rock and crevices for hiding. Target feed occasionally to ensure adequate nutrition, especially in ultra-clean systems. Avoid exposure to air during transfer to prevent stress or damage.
