Description
Blue Cheek Goby (Valenciennea strigata / Striped Blue-Cheek Goby)
A peaceful and highly active marine species, the Blue Cheek Goby is instantly recognisable by its slender body, blue cheek markings, and distinctive sand-sifting behaviour. An excellent choice for reef and community aquariums, it helps keep the substrate clean while adding personality to the tank.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with other non-aggressive species such as clownfish, blennies, and gobies. Avoid aggressive or large tankmates that may outcompete or stress it. Can coexist with other sand-sifting gobies if the tank is spacious.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it ideal for live rock and reef setups.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Also sifts sand for microfauna and detritus. Offer a varied diet of high-quality marine pellets or flakes to supplement natural foraging.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 150L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated. Requires a well-established aquarium with soft sand substrate and stable water conditions to thrive.
Top Tip:
Provide at least 5–10cm of fine sand for burrowing and natural foraging behaviour. Include live rock for hiding spots and to encourage natural activity. Multiple gobies can be kept together if there is ample space.
