Tuxedo Urchin (Mespilia globulus)
A colourful and highly beneficial marine invertebrate, the Tuxedo Urchin is known for its vibrant blue, red, or purple body with contrasting spines. This unique species is an excellent algae grazer, helping to keep live rock and aquarium surfaces clean while adding visual interest to reef setups.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Safe with most community fish including clownfish, gobies, blennies, and tangs. Avoid aggressive species such as triggers and large puffers that may prey on it.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe with caution. Does not harm corals, but may pick up loose frags, shells, or decorations to use as camouflage. Ensure corals are securely placed.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily feeds on algae, including film algae and some macroalgae. Supplement with algae wafers or dried seaweed if natural algae levels are low.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 80L
Care Level:
Easy to moderate – hardy once acclimated, but sensitive to poor water quality and rapid parameter changes.
Top Tip:
Ensure plenty of algae or supplement feeding to prevent starvation. Secure loose corals and decorations, as this species is known for carrying items on its back for camouflage.
