Description
Spotted Pyjama Cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera)
A striking and peaceful marine species, the Spotted Pyjama Cardinalfish is easily recognised by its silver-white body with black vertical stripes and scattered spots along the fins. Its calm temperament, schooling behaviour, and unique patterning make it a standout in community and reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful and best kept in small groups (3–6). Mixes well with other non-aggressive species such as gobies, blennies, clownfish, and small tangs. Avoid aggressive or large tankmates that may outcompete them for food.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Does not harm corals or invertebrates, making it suitable for live rock and reef systems.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on small meaty foods. Offer frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Multiple small feedings per day help maintain colour and vitality.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated, but providing plenty of hiding spots helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour.
Top Tip:
Keep in small schools to display natural social and schooling behaviour. They are particularly active and show their best colours in mature aquariums with ample open swimming space.
