Scooter Blenny (Synchiropus ocellatus / Scooter Dragonet)
A peaceful and fascinating micro-predator, the Scooter Blenny (often called a Scooter Dragonet) is admired for its constant “hovering” movement and intricate patterns of spots and markings. Despite its name, it is not a true blenny, but a dragonet that spends most of its time picking along rockwork and sand for tiny food items.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with other non-aggressive species such as clownfish, gobies, blennies, and small wrasses. Avoid fast or aggressive feeders that may outcompete it for food.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Completely harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it ideal for reef aquariums.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds primarily on copepods, amphipods, and other microfauna. In established systems, may accept frozen foods such as enriched brine shrimp and mysis shrimp, but reliance on live pod populations is important. Feed multiple small times daily if possible.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 100L
Care Level:
Moderate – requires a mature aquarium with a strong, established pod population. Can struggle in newer or low-nutrient systems without sufficient natural food.
Top Tip:
Ensure a well-established rock system with refugium or pod production if possible. Avoid housing with overly competitive feeders to ensure it gets enough natural grazing time.
