Description
Rocket Gar – Sleek, Agile, and Strikingly Beautiful
(Xenentodon cancila)
The Rocket Gar (Xenentodon cancila), also known as the Asian Needlefish or Candlefish, is a sleek and distinctive species native to Southeast Asia. Recognized for its elongated body, sharp beak-like snout, and striking appearance, this species is perfect for aquarists looking to add a unique and active fish to their tanks. With its speed, elegance, and curious nature, the Rocket Gar brings both visual interest and a sense of movement to your aquarium.
Key Features:
-
Distinctive Appearance: The Rocket Gar has a long, slender body with a pointed, beak-like snout that gives it its signature “rocket” shape, making it an eye-catching species
-
Medium Size: Grows up to 20–30 cm (8–12 inches), making it suitable for medium to large aquariums
-
Active and Agile: Known for its quick movements and ability to dart around the tank, the Rocket Gar is an agile swimmer
-
Peaceful Nature: A peaceful species that does well in community tanks, as long as its tankmates are not too small
-
Unique Swimmer: Unlike many fish, the Rocket Gar is a surface swimmer, often seen gliding just beneath the water’s surface
Tank Requirements:
-
Minimum tank size: 200 liters (50 gallons) for a group of 2–4 individuals
-
Temperature: 24°C–30°C (75°F–86°F)
-
pH: 6.5–7.5 (neutral to slightly acidic)
-
The tank should have a spacious layout with plenty of open swimming areas to accommodate their active nature
-
Prefers well-oxygenated water with moderate water flow, as this mimics their natural riverine habitat
-
Provide hiding spots using plants, rocks, and driftwood, but keep the open water space free for swimming
-
A tight-fitting lid is essential, as Rocket Gars are known to leap out of tanks if given the opportunity
Compatibility:
-
Peaceful but Active: The Rocket Gar is generally peaceful but can be a bit territorial, especially when kept in smaller groups
-
Ideal tankmates include medium to large peaceful species, such as tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, and larger catfish like Corydoras
-
Can be kept with other species that occupy the middle to top levels of the tank, as it is a surface swimmer
-
Avoid keeping with small fish, as the Rocket Gar might see them as potential food
-
Should be kept in small groups of 2–4 individuals, as they are social and do better in the company of their own kind
Feeding Tips:
-
Carnivorous—prefers a diet of live or frozen foods, such as small fish, crustaceans, and insects
-
Will eagerly accept high-quality pellets and flakes formulated for carnivores, as well as live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia
-
Can also feed on small insects or worms, and some will even hunt small invertebrates or shrimp in the tank
-
Feed 2–3 times a day in small portions that are easy for the Rocket Gar to catch and consume
-
It's important to provide a varied diet to ensure optimal health and color
