Key Features & Care Guidelines:
-
Distinctive Red Eyes: As their name suggests, the Red Eye Tetra is most famous for its vivid, bright red eyes, which create a striking contrast against its otherwise clear body.
-
Behavior: Peaceful, social schooling fish; best kept in groups of 6 or more to promote natural behavior and reduce stress.
-
Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons recommended for a small school, although a larger tank is ideal to accommodate their active swimming and schooling behavior.
-
Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and temperatures from 74°F to 80°F (23°C to 27°C).
-
Diet: Omnivorous; accepts flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
-
Tank Setup: Ideal for well-planted tanks with gentle water flow and plenty of hiding spots. Soft lighting will bring out their natural colors and the brilliant red of their eyes.
-
Experience Level: Hardy and adaptable, making them an excellent choice for both beginner and more experienced aquarists.
The Red Eye Tetra (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae) is a dynamic and striking species that adds both color and movement to your aquarium.
