Description

Yellow Back Vampire Crab – A Colorful, Hardy Freshwater Crustacean
(Geosesarma sp.)

The Yellow Back Vampire Crab (Geosesarma sp.) is an eye-catching and unique species that stands out in any aquarium. With its striking yellow-orange coloration and distinct "vampire-like" red eyes, this small yet vibrant crab adds an exotic touch to freshwater and brackish water tanks. Native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, this active and hardy species is perfect for aquarists looking for a fun and visually stunning addition to their setup.

Key Features:

  • Vibrant Coloration: Dark body with a bright yellow-orange "back" and vivid red eyes

  • Compact Size: Grows to about 4-5 cm (1.5–2 inches), making it ideal for smaller to medium-sized tanks

  • High Activity: Known for its energetic behavior, often climbing and exploring rocks, plants, and other structures

  • Hardy and Resilient: Adaptable to a variety of water conditions and relatively easy to care for

Tank Requirements:

  • Minimum tank size: 40 liters (10 gallons) for a small group

  • Temperature: 24°C–28°C (75°F–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)

  • Brackish Water: While it can tolerate freshwater, a slightly brackish environment (with some salt content) mimics its natural habitat

  • Needs plenty of hiding spots such as caves, rocks, and plants for shelter

  • A secure tank lid is necessary, as these crabs are known to climb and potentially escape

Compatibility:

  • Peaceful but territorial—best kept with other similarly sized, non-aggressive species

  • Ideal tankmates include peaceful fish, shrimp, and other small crustaceans

  • Avoid keeping with larger, more aggressive fish that might prey on the crabs or stress them

  • Can be kept in small groups, but it’s essential to provide enough space to reduce territorial conflicts

Feeding Tips:

  • Omnivorous—enjoys a varied diet of live foods like worms and small insects, as well as plant matter like blanched vegetables

  • Also accepts high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and occasional meaty treats

  • Feed 2–3 times a week, ensuring there is enough food for all tank inhabitants
