Description
Orange Spot Filefish (Oxymonacanthus longirostris / Orange-Spotted Filefish)
A delicate and highly distinctive marine species, the Orange Spot Filefish is admired for its pale body covered in vivid orange spots and its long, slender snout. Its unusual shape and gentle nature make it a fascinating addition to specialist marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with other calm, non-aggressive species such as gobies, blennies, firefish, and small wrasses. Avoid aggressive tankmates that may outcompete it for food or cause stress.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. Known for feeding on coral polyps, particularly SPS corals such as Acropora, making it unsuitable for most reef aquariums. Best suited for species-focused or carefully planned fish-only systems.
Diet:
Carnivore/Specialist Feeder – naturally feeds on coral polyps and can be challenging to adapt to prepared foods. Some individuals may accept finely chopped seafood, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and specialised frozen foods. Frequent feeding is essential.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 200L
Care Level:
Advanced – sensitive and often difficult to maintain due to specialised feeding requirements. Best suited for experienced aquarists with mature, stable systems.
Top Tip:
Only choose specimens already feeding on prepared foods where possible. Provide a calm environment with minimal competition and excellent water quality to improve long-term success.
