Long Nose Hawkfish – West Indian Ocean (Oxycirrhites typus)
A striking and charismatic marine species, the Long Nose Hawkfish is instantly recognisable by its elongated snout, white body with red lattice markings, and bold, perching behaviour. Known for perching on live rock and observing its surroundings, it adds both activity and personality to reef aquariums.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with peaceful to moderately robust species such as gobies, blennies, clownfish, and small wrasses. Avoid very small or slow-moving fish that may be harassed. Can be territorial over perch spots in small tanks.
Reef Compatibility:
Generally reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, but may occasionally prey on very small shrimp or microfauna. Ideal for live rock-heavy reef setups.
Diet:
Carnivore – feeds on small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Can also accept high-quality marine pellets. Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions.

- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once acclimated, but requires a well-established aquarium with plenty of perching and hiding spots.
Top Tip:
Provide live rock with multiple ledges or crevices for perching. This species often “observes” the tank from high vantage points, so ensure plenty of vertical space to reduce territorial disputes.
