Giant Silver Hatchetfish

The Giant Silver Hatchetfish is a fascinating South American surface-dwelling fish recognised by its distinctive deep, hatchet-shaped body and shimmering silver colouration. Considerably larger and more substantial than many of the commonly seen smaller hatchetfish species, it makes an unusual and impressive addition to a peaceful community aquarium.

These fish naturally spend most of their time close to the water's surface and look particularly impressive when maintained in a good-sized group.

  • Adult Size: Around 8–9 cm
  • Temperature: 23–28°C
  • pH: 5.5–7.5
  • Tank Size: Minimum 120 litres, with plenty of surface area
  • Diet: Omnivorous/insectivorous – quality floating foods supplemented with frozen and live foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and small insects
  • Temperament: Peaceful and social
  • Grouping: Best kept in groups of at least 6, with larger groups recommended where space allows
  • Compatibility: Excellent alongside other peaceful South American and similarly sized community species
  • Tank Setup: Provide plenty of open surface swimming space with areas of floating vegetation and gentle to moderate water movement
  • Important: Hatchetfish are exceptionally powerful jumpers, so a secure, tightly fitting aquarium lid is absolutely essential

Free delivery applies to eligible orders up to 20kg and excludes livestock, aquariums, terrariums and other oversized items.

Standard Parcel Delivery

Our standard parcel delivery charges are calculated according to the weight of your order and the available delivery service.

Orders placed before 12 noon may be dispatched the same day on our current dispatch days.

Express Pallet

75–500kg • Usually 1–3 working days

Designed for large and heavy orders that cannot be sent using our standard parcel service.

Please note: We currently dispatch parcels Wednesday to Friday.
