The Fire Scallop, also commonly known as the Flame Scallop, is a spectacular marine invertebrate recognised for its vivid red mantle and long, flowing tentacles. Its striking appearance makes it incredibly eye-catching, particularly when positioned amongst natural rockwork. Despite its beauty, this is a specialised filter-feeding species best suited to mature aquariums and experienced marine keepers.
Compatibility: Peaceful. Suitable alongside peaceful reef fish and non-predatory invertebrates. Avoid wrasses, triggers, puffers, large crabs and other species likely to pick at or consume molluscs.
Reef Compatibility: Reef-safe. Does not harm corals or other sessile reef inhabitants, although it may relocate itself to a shaded crevice or cave after introduction.
Diet: Filter feeder – requires regular access to extremely fine suspended foods including phytoplankton and other suitable microfoods. Target feeding can help ensure adequate nutrition, although food must be appropriately sized for filter feeding.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–26°C
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Minimum Tank Size: 100L
Care Level: Advanced – Fire Scallops have specialised feeding requirements and can be difficult to maintain long-term in captivity. They are best kept in mature, nutrient-rich reef systems capable of supporting regular filter feeding.
Top Tip: Do not expect your Fire Scallop to remain exactly where you place it. They can move by rapidly opening and closing their shells and will often seek out shaded caves or overhangs with suitable water flow. Regular feeding with appropriate fine planktonic foods is essential, as they cannot survive on light alone.
