Description
Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus)
A bold and spectacular marine species, the Clown Tang is instantly recognisable for its vibrant blue and yellow stripes running horizontally along its body, giving it a striking “clown-like” appearance. A true centerpiece for large saltwater aquariums, it is highly active and adds stunning colour and energy.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Best kept with other robust, similarly sized species such as tangs, angelfish, and large wrasse. Avoid housing with small or timid fish, as they may be stressed or harassed. Can be territorial, especially in confined spaces.
Reef Compatibility:
Generally reef-safe regarding corals, but may graze on some soft algae or detritus. Does not harm invertebrates.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily grazes on algae. Offer a diet rich in marine algae, spirulina-based flakes or pellets, and occasional frozen or dried seafood. Provide multiple feedings daily to support growth and vibrant coloration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 600L
Care Level:
Advanced – requires a large, well-established aquarium with stable water parameters and plenty of swimming space. Sensitive to poor water quality.
Top Tip:
Provide ample live rock for grazing and open swimming areas. Introduce only after the tank is mature to reduce stress and territorial disputes. Regularly supplement with algae-rich foods to maintain brilliant colouration.
