Description
Bursa Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus verrucosus / Blackpatch Triggerfish)
A bold and highly intelligent marine species, the Bursa Triggerfish is known for its striking pattern of white, blue, and yellow tones with distinctive dark markings. Active, curious, and full of personality, it is a standout fish best suited to large, well-planned marine systems.
Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive to aggressive. Best kept with large, robust tankmates such as tangs, angelfish, larger wrasses, and other similarly sized triggerfish (in very large systems). Avoid small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates, which may be eaten.
Reef Compatibility:
Not reef-safe. Will typically prey on crustaceans (shrimp, crabs, snails) and may damage or rearrange rockwork and corals. Best suited to fish-only marine aquariums.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on a varied diet including squid, shrimp, mussels, clams, krill, and high-quality marine pellets. Hard-shelled foods are beneficial for natural beak wear. Feed 1–2 times daily.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 600L
Care Level:
Advanced – requires a large, secure aquarium with strong filtration and careful tankmate selection. Can be territorial and rearrange décor.
Top Tip:
Use secure rockwork and avoid loose decorations, as triggers are known to dig and move objects. Always ensure a tight-fitting lid, as they are strong jumpers.
