Description
Blue Iguana (Iguana iguana)
The Blue Iguana is a stunning colour form of the Green Iguana, Iguana iguana, selectively bred for its beautiful blue to turquoise colouration. These impressive arboreal lizards are intelligent, active and capable of developing individual personalities. Although particularly striking when young, they grow into large and powerful reptiles and are best suited to experienced keepers who can provide the considerable space and specialist care they require.
Habitat
Blue Iguana iguana are highly arboreal and require a spacious enclosure with substantial climbing and basking opportunities.
- Enclosure: Very large, secure and tall enclosure; adults may require a custom-built vivarium or dedicated reptile room
- Basking Temperature: Approximately 35–38°C
- Ambient Temperature: Around 27–30°C
- Cooler Area: Approximately 24–26°C
- Humidity: Generally around 65–80%
- Lighting: High-quality, appropriately positioned UVB lighting is essential alongside suitable basking lamps
- Decor: Large sturdy branches, shelves, logs, foliage and elevated resting areas
- All climbing structures should be securely fixed to support the weight and strength of an adult iguana
- Fresh drinking water should always be available
Feeding
Blue Iguanas are herbivorous and require a varied plant-based diet.
- Staple Diet: A broad selection of suitable leafy greens
- Vegetables: A variety of appropriate vegetables can be offered alongside leafy greens
- Additional Foods: Safe edible flowers and plants can provide excellent dietary variety
- Fruit: Should make up only a small proportion of the overall diet
- Juveniles: Require regular feeding to support healthy growth
- Adults: Should receive an appropriately portioned, varied plant-based diet
- Appropriate calcium and vitamin supplementation should be provided
- Fresh water should always be available
Correct nutrition and calcium balance are particularly important for healthy skeletal development and long-term wellbeing.
General Care
Blue Iguanas are intelligent and impressive reptiles, but their eventual size, strength and long lifespan make them a significant commitment.
- Temperament: Intelligent, alert and inquisitive, with considerable variation between individuals
- Handling: Patient and consistent interaction from a young age can help establish trust, although adults are extremely strong and require confident handling
- Adult Size: Commonly around 1.2–1.8 metres in total length, with large males potentially becoming particularly impressive
- Lifespan: Commonly 15–20+ years with excellent care
- Activity: Diurnal and highly arboreal, spending much of the day climbing, basking and exploring
- Maintenance: Requires powerful heating and UVB, high humidity, substantial accommodation and regular enrichment
Their small juvenile size can be deceptive, so prospective owners should plan for the space and equipment required by a fully grown iguana before purchasing.
