Description
Auriga Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga / Threadfin Butterflyfish)
A graceful and eye-catching marine species, the Auriga Butterflyfish is recognised by its bright white body, bold black markings, yellow highlights, and elegant trailing dorsal filament. Its active swimming behaviour and striking appearance make it a popular choice for larger marine aquariums.
Compatibility:
Peaceful to semi-aggressive. Best kept with other non-aggressive to moderately robust species such as tangs, wrasses, angelfish, and clownfish. May become territorial with similar butterflyfish in smaller aquariums.
Reef Compatibility:
Not fully reef-safe. May nip at soft corals, LPS corals, feather dusters, and other sessile invertebrates. Best suited to fish-only or carefully monitored reef systems.
Diet:
Omnivore – feeds on a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, marine algae, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feed 2–3 times daily for optimal health and colouration.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 300L
Care Level:
Moderate – hardy once established but requires stable water conditions, good swimming space, and a mature aquarium with ample rockwork for grazing and shelter.
Top Tip:
Provide a varied diet and plenty of open swimming space. Introducing specimens that are already feeding well greatly improves long-term success and acclimation.
