Algae Blenny (Salarias fasciatus / Lawnmower Blenny)
A peaceful and highly useful marine species, the Algae Blenny is known for its elongated body, charismatic appearance, and exceptional algae-eating behaviour. Ideal for reef aquariums, it helps control nuisance algae while adding personality to your tank.
Compatibility:
Peaceful. Best kept with other non-aggressive species such as clownfish, gobies, and tangs. Avoid overly aggressive or large predatory fish that may bully or stress it.
Reef Compatibility:
Reef-safe. Harmless to corals and invertebrates, making it ideal for live rock and reef setups.
Diet:
Herbivore – primarily grazes on algae. Offer supplemental foods such as spirulina-based flakes, marine algae sheets, and high-quality herbivore pellets to ensure a balanced diet. Grazing should be encouraged throughout the day.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Minimum Tank Size: 120L
Care Level:
Easy – hardy and adaptable, suitable for beginner and experienced marine aquarists.
Top Tip:
Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Keeping multiple feeding options ensures the Algae Blenny remains healthy and active, especially in tanks with limited natural algae growth.
