Pygmy Corydoras – A Tiny Gem for Your Freshwater Aquarium

The Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) is the perfect choice for aquarists looking for a small, peaceful, and active bottom-dweller that brings both charm and functionality to any freshwater aquarium. Known for its tiny size, vibrant personality, and attractive appearance, this delightful species is a must-have for nano tanks, planted aquariums, and peaceful community setups.

Despite its small size—typically growing to only 1 to 1.5 inches—the Pygmy Corydoras packs a lot of personality. Its body features a smooth, light tan to pale golden color, adorned with delicate black markings that give it an elegant, leopard-like pattern. With its tiny size and swift movements, it scurries along the substrate in search of food, making it an excellent cleaner and a fun, active species to watch.

This species is incredibly social and thrives in groups. A school of Pygmy Corydoras will exhibit fascinating social behaviors, often swimming together in small, tight formations and foraging the tank floor for organic debris and leftover food. Its peaceful nature makes it ideal for a community tank, where it coexists peacefully with other non-aggressive species. Its small size also makes it the perfect addition to nano tanks or planted aquariums.

Key Features:

  • Tiny Size: A perfect fit for nano and small aquariums, growing to just 1 to 1.5 inches in length

  • Beautiful Pattern: Light golden to tan body with delicate black markings, creating a unique and visually appealing appearance

  • Social & Active: Prefers to live in groups, where it exhibits charming, playful behavior and interacts with its tank mates

  • Efficient Bottom Feeder: Works tirelessly to clean up uneaten food, detritus, and organic matter, maintaining a cleaner and healthier aquarium

  • Peaceful Nature: Ideal for peaceful community tanks, as it gets along well with a wide range of non-aggressive fish

Care Guidelines:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons for a small group (5 or more)

  • Water Temp: 72–78°F (22–26°C)

  • pH Range: 6.0–7.5

  • Diet: Omnivorous – enjoys sinking pellets, live or frozen foods (such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms), and occasional plant matter like blanched spinach or zucchini

  • Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care

Tip: Ensure the substrate is soft and fine, such as sand or smooth gravel, to protect the delicate barbels of the Pygmy Corydoras. It’s also important to provide plenty of hiding places with plants or decorations to create a secure environment where they can retreat and feel safe.

The Pygmy Corydoras is a stunningly cute and functional addition to any freshwater tank. Its small size, peaceful nature, and efficient scavenging abilities make it an ideal choice for nano tanks, community setups, and aquascaping projects. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned aquarist, this charming catfish will bring life and beauty to your aquarium.
